Composed as a birthday gift to the New Hollywood String Quartet for their debut concert, "Communications" received its critically acclaimed world premiere at the Colburn School of Performing Arts' Zipper Hall in January, 2001. "Giocoso" characterizes the urban energy that often accompanies members as they arrive for rehearsal. The tone is extroverted and giddy. "Waltzer" is about elegance, style and movement. After a brief, suspense infused introduction, the music sallies forth into an infectious waltz. "Invocation", as the title suggests, expresses in its arching phrases and chant-like exhortations a heartfelt need by musicians and music lovers to connect with grace in the process of experiencing music. "Gossip!" rushes forth in virtuosic abandon appropriate to a wild rumor spreading through a community of musicians. |
